The Royal Symphonic Band of the Belgian Guides conducted by Robert Groslot, Soloist:Carlo Willems
The concerto for Marimba, Vibes and Concert Band, composed by Robert Groslot is inspired by “The arrival of Spring in Woldgate”, a painting by David Hockney.Woldgate is a road in the country outside Bridlington.’I wanted the floating feeling of very early spring, when the first leaves appear. They come out at the very bottom of the trees, and you don’t see very much of the branches. They seem to float,’ says Hockney. This floating feel you will discover in the music.Studying and interpreting this concerto was a real challenge for me in the way I think the composition is completely innovative. The orchestra part is not just accompanying but all the instruments are constantly in dialogue with the soloist. No piece of the puzzle may be missing.Robert Groslot combines different composition techniques and challenging rhythm in his music and he created as a result a new sound.
